R.Neighbourhood is Back!
If you remember this series, you know what it’s all about! If you’re new here, R.Neighbourhood is all about capturing the community around us - the people, their stories, and matching their own, unique style to an R.Place look.
This is Pete, owner of King Surf - an absolute local legend.
We followed him through the store, shopping for a few looks (styling tips from Joe, as always), then headed over to his side of the neighbourhood - Mawgan Porth.
All photographed on 35mm film.

While we had the pleasure of hanging out with Pete, Grace asked him a few questions about himself and the local community.
Take a look at what he had to say…

What do you love most about YOUR neighbourhood?
“I'd say I love the most about my neighbourhood… okay…. I love the community. Obviously, and what an eclectic mix we have here in Mawgan Porth. And we all club together and do a lot for the village- when it comes to raising money for the roof of the village hall, it’s surprising to see how many faces pop out of the woodwork to create charity events… oh, shall I start again, I’m not making sense…
The community is welcoming. Loads of different personalities, and we all mix for the greater good.”

Would you consider yourself a neighbourhood celebrity Pete…?
“Noooo.. Definitely not… You have to be like the main character in the village hall panto for that – cabaret. Once I get to that status, then I know I can be called a celebrity. It’s a small village and there are only 7 or 8 businesses that are run by locals- it’s easy to know everybody and be known by everybody for sometimes good things and sometimes not so good…”

If your style were a movie/album, what would it be?
“Oooo - sadly probably something like Blue Juice with Ewan McGregor in it - based on the 90s about a surfer in Cornwall… my clothing hasn't changed since the 90’s, and I still look like a 19-year-old roller blader…. Hold on… don’t put that out, I’m a surfer - not a roller blader….
Shorts, flip-flops, and a t-shirt is generally what you’ll find me in. That's not what you want to hear- but its the truth!!
BUT…after being styled by the lovely people at R. Place… I looked a lot more glam, and I would say I could fit into some of the nicer characters in a better movie… like James Bond, maybe.”

How would your friends describe your style in 3 words?
“Relaxed. Incognito, but slightly smart still…. I do try not to look too scruffy whilst looking quite scruffy.”

After the shop, we made our way to the Merrymoor in Mawgan Porth, where Pete’s own King Surf IPA is on the lineup - complete with branded glasses.

What/where is the biggest wave you’ve ever caught - is it Mawgan Porth?
“Probably Mawgan Porth, to be honest, it’s nice to go out when it’s big. Everyone eggs me on - but 3 times over my head still gives me the shivers.
The scariest wave in the world would be a secret wave in Ireland that got me riled up and scared… one of the reefs in Ireland… never to be named… obviously because it’s a secret!”

Tell us a bit about King Surf.
“That’s easyyy…. King Surf has been running for 30 years - I’ve had it for 20 of those years, and it’s one of the oldest surf schools in Cornwall… and also Surfing England centre of excellence now - a top status we can achieve. We specialise in... teaching everyone from all abilities and levels - rare to find… we’re all old and full of knowledge.
Located in Mawgan Porth - best beach in Cornwall for learning to surf on - because it works all through the tides, it’s a swell magnet and is such a lovely place to be. It gets the same swell as Fistral - just not the crowds. We're bloody good!!”

A huge thank you to Pete for being a part of the R.Neighbourhood project - and for kickstarting his modelling career!
