R.Journal #34 is a bit of a love letter to food, and to the brilliant places we’ve been enjoying lately…
Here’s a little walk-through of some of our favourite spots, and places we’ve found (and re-found) recently. As hospitality in Cornwall begins to open up once again for Spring, we’re constantly reminded of how lucky we are to have such an incredible mix of cafés, bakeries and restaurants right here on our doorstep!
From long lunches to quick coffee stops, it’s all about good food, good people and places that pull you back, time and time again…
PLONK’D - Wadebridge
@plon.kd
Roo and Betsy headed out to Wadebridge last weekend for a trip to Plonk’d. Having heard so much about it, we felt we must try it out - apparently the cocktails are worth a visit alone! It certainly lived up to it’s reputation and some. Situated in a little side street with lovely hanging plants and a very friendly welcome, we settled in with a couple of Margaritas - delicious!
The menu changes daily on chalkboards, tapas style and had all the favourites plus some really interesting additions!
Betsy and I thought that the croquetas were the best we’d ever tasted, as were the Boquerones. The food came out at a civilised, slow pace so we didn’t feel overwhelmed or rushed, and all was washed down with a dry, minerally Cava - we loved it all!

THE RISING SUN - Altarnun
@therisingsunaltarnun
Grace walked to the top of Brown Willy - very happy with herself on top of the highest point in Cornwall! As a reward for the trek, she then headed to the Rising Sun in Altarnun - an absolute hidden gem!
Grace says it was the best pint of Guinness she’s tasted - and.. what a bargain on the set menu:
2 courses £23
3 courses £28

FOUR BOYS - Rock
@fourboys.cafe
Grace headed to Four Boys for a celebratory dinner overlooking the stunning Rock estuary. Named after four brothers who came together to create this much-loved local spot, it’s easy to see why it’s become a firm favourite.
Expect delicious seafood, fresh pasta, and dishes made with the very best local ingredients. It’s also a go-to for the team, and Grace never misses the chance to enjoy a Negroni in their newly opened bar - the perfect sundowner.
And an exciting collaboration is on the horizon with the Four Boys team… so keep your eyes peeled.

THE HARLYN - Harlyn
@the_harlyn
Once home to the old local Harlyn pub, which was knocked down, The Harlyn - in Harlyn Bay has brought something special back to its place, much to the delight of locals.
Grace visited for Mother’s Day and described it as a lovely experience from start to finish. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with a relaxed coastal charm and perfectly brewed beers from @bluntrockbrewery. The food was delicious, and the Mother’s Day set menu was a real highlight - full of flavour and great choice, whether you’re in the mood for something fresh from the grill or something rich and comforting.
The visit was rounded off perfectly with a stop at Harlyn Supply Co, browsing local produce and enjoying a coffee, followed by a sunset stroll along Harlyn Bay Beach - what more could you want?

THE PIG - Harlyn Bay
@the_pig_hotels
Kirsty took her Mum to The Pig for Mother’s Day and enjoyed the super relaxed vibe. It’s as though you’re in someone’s little farmhouse kitchen! The food was great quality, and at a great price point too. Homemade pickles, jams and breakfast bites adorn the shelves in the dining area, and for under £25pp, the amount of food on offer was fantastic.
Finishing up with a little stroll around the gardens, where all the fruit and veg is grown, the morning was wholesome and highly recommended!

THE PICKLED PLATE - Mawgan Porth
@the.pickled.plate
Can you imagine our excitement when Jas told us that The Pickled Plate (formerly Duchy Grub from Harlyn campsite) was opening at The Park in Mawgan Porth - just on our doorstep!!
We’ve been a few times, and it’s just fabulous - set in what was previously the Yurt village, they’re cooking over fire, a simple, delicious menu using seasonal ingredients and including plenty of variety.
Cosy atmosphere, real attention to detail with the chairs, table and glasswear, Jasmin’s wine selection is always delicious and the service was great. We will be back many times, such a great addition to the area and a must visit.

We hope you manage to get out and try some of these amazing food spots. Any more you’d recommend? Let us know!
